Apprentice recipe book: Achy Body Scrub

Achy Body Scrub

By Annie Lambeth-Mansell

I love using this scrub after a hard day in the garden to sooth any bruised or aching muscles, and freshen my tired mind and body. It's also great in the morning and gives me a minty zing to start the day. Enjoy!

Ingredients:

  • Comfrey leaves
  • Almond oil
  • Beeswax
  • Seasalt
  • Fresh peppermint leaves

1, Make a comfrey leaf infused oil: Place fresh comfrey leaves in a bain-marie with enough almond oil to cover the leaves. Simmer the water but do not allow the oil to boil, stir frequently. Leave on the heat until the oil is a dark green and the moisture from the leaves has evaporated. This can take 8-12 hours, and needs an attentive eye to make sure the oil does not boil. Strain the plant matter through a muslin to leave a beautiful dark green oil.

2. Return the oil to the bain-marie and add beewax. I find 1 tablespoon of wax granules per 500ml of oil is enough to provide a little thickness, you can add more if you want a more solid scrub texture. Gently heat the oil so that the wax melts and remove from the heat. Be careful not the overheat, only a little heat is needed to melt the wax.

3. Add as much salt as you like in order to create the texture of scrub you want. Sometimes I like it really oily if my skin is really dry, sometimes I like the salt really dense if my skin needs a good scrub.

4. Roughly chop some fresh peppermint leaves and stir into the mixture (I sometimes add fresh eucalyptus leaves at this stage too, great if you have a cold of some sinus congestion).

5. Spoon into glass jars before the mixture gets too cool. Scrub away in the shower or bath as needed.
