Sensory Solutions

Foundation Year

Learn to prepare and use your own herbal remedies created directly from nature on our innovative herbal medicine course.

The Sensory Herb Apprenticeship Foundation course will introduce you to plants to use when you or your family are ill, and deepen your connection to the land by getting to know the herbs that grow around you.

Whether you live in the countryside, or your only contact with plants is in a flowerpot, we will take you step by step into the world of herbs.

Our residential apprenticeship in the beautiful Dorset countryside gives you the opportunity to work hands-on with over 50 medicinal plants which grow on site. Understand off-the-shelf herbal remedies and alternatives to pharmaceutical medicines. Learn about herbs of the hedgerow, meet a new world of medicinal plants and a community of like-minded earth-lovers!

Foundation course overview

This is a year-long foundation course with 100 hours of contact time.

Established in 2009, the apprenticeship is designed to give you the knowledge and skills you need to incorporate herbal medicine into your daily life. Your senses, heart and intellect will be opened to the ancient, magical and practical art that is herbal medicine.

Half your time on the course will be spent working hands-on with plants and the other half will give you the technical and medical grounding to apply herbs to healing.

We underpin all your study with the rhythms and structures provided to us by nature — the cycle of the seasons, the lunar cycle, the growth and decline cycle of plants. You will graduate with practical tools to creatively blend ritual, art and medicine to develop your own healing practice that you can share with others.

Throughout the year, you will compile your own Materia Medica, your personal herb reference book full of pressed plants, drawings and all the information you learn. We’ll train you to use our unique set of Sensory Herb tools which connect you with the energetics of plants. Working in this way facilitates meaningful, memorable relationships with plants.

Sensory Herbalism is a craft. Creativity and art infuses all our work and teachings.  Alongside knowledge in botany, medicine making and the human body systems, the course guides you to develop your own creative plant folklore.  Don’t worry if you haven’t picked up a pencil since school or if you judge your own art harshly. We ease you through the process step by step. Exploring your own creative soul while being part of a supportive community of like-minded students and alumni is all part of the journey.  You will be amazed what plants can help you discover about yourself.

The foundation year can be taken as a stand-alone course, but also serves as the gateway to our further two-year, Sensory Herb Practitioner training.

What our apprentices have to say:

Kris Walker

Katie Shellard

"If I had to summarise in one word what I gained from the apprenticeship, it would be 'connection'. In short, it has changed the way I view the world around me, now I know that I have plant allies everywhere! The apprenticeship showed me how to identify tens of medicinal plants and how to use them in remedies for myself and for treating friends and family. It has also given me confidence to listen to and trust my intuition. Since taking the course, I am able to treat myself and others naturally for common conditions - colds, flu, nausea, skin conditions, anxiety, insomnia, period pain and digestive issues (and more!). I love making remedies for friends and family, and taking them on herb walks. I find people are receptive and enthusiastic about plant medicine. This is an ancient knowledge, that we start to remember when we connect with the plants. Since moving to a different country, herbs have been my friends and a way of making new human friends. I would recommend this course in a heartbeat."

Dee Dade

"I came across Fi and Karen’s website while browsing one day — as soon as I saw the herbal apprenticeship they were offering I knew there wasn’t any choice but to sign up. I have always had a connection with nature, even as a little girl I knew that nature was far beyond scientific explanation. A conventional training system certainly didn't appeal but training with Fi and Karen made it accessible. They teach in a manner that enables a connection far deeper than any intellectual/theoretical training could possibly offer. Initially, I thought my training was for “me”, to use solely in my own life but people became very interested in what I was up to. My passion grew and herbs filled every part of my life and every cupboard, literally. I now teach people Herb Craft workshops, connecting others to this ancient knowledge, connecting them to the wild herbs, the earth, the seasons and themselves. If you are considering Fi and Karen’s Sensory herbal apprenticeship, do it! They are passionate, inspiring and offer an apprenticeship that gives you deep roots into the amazing world of herbs."

Belle Benfield

"Before I took the apprenticeship, I could count the medicinal plants that I knew on one hand and had struggled for years with abdominal pain. I committed to the apprenticeship and at the end of year one, I could recognize 45 medicinal herbs in the wild, had my own medicine cabinet full of tinctures and salves I had made myself and a beautiful reference book full of my drawings, notes and discoveries that I could refer to whenever I needed.  The medical study on the course had taught me what I needed to know about the cause of my abdominal pain and the herbs I needed to keep myself pain free. Inspired, I had the opportunity to complete the practitioner training and through Karen and Fiona’s generous teaching and expertise, case studies and working with patients and many more hours growing, harvesting and making medicine with plants, I graduated with the confidence and skills I needed to dedicate my life to medicinal herbalism."

FAQs

How does this compare to other courses?

There are many courses on herbal medicine available: some are online, others are day workshops, or non-residential courses, some are shor and others can up up to seven years. There is even a University degree in Herbalism.

Herbal medicine is a broad church and herbal medicine courses differ greatly.

With any course you need to feel connected to the ethos of the course and the teachers.

We offer:

  • Experienced teachers with over 40 years of combined herbal practice experience
  • Residential weekends, full board
  • Access to a network of like-minded people
  • A focus on creativity and art
  • A political ethos

What are the additional costs?

  • Travel to and from the venue

  • The materials for your own herbal preparations such as alcohol, honey, almond oil, vinegar, empty jam jars

  • Notebook and pens

  • An art book and any art materials such as coloured pens or pencils

  • Books on the reading list

What is required of me to participate in this course?

The course is designed so that no previous knowledge is needed, just an interest in plants.  You will need to do approximately 25 hours work (in the foundation year) in between each residential session.  If you have no experience in Anatomy and Physiology, you may need a little more time on this.

Will completing this course qualify me to be a herbalist?

Our Foundation year can stand alone or lead to the practitioner training.  When you complete our practitioner training, you will receive certification as a Sensory Herbalist which will allow you to get insurance to cover your Sensory Herb Practice.

Herbalism is not a government registered profession. As such there is no specific legal qualification that is required to practice as a herbalist.

As core members of the herbal medicine community, we are committed to training people to be able to gain the skills and knowledge they need to work with herbs safely and effectively. We are self-certified and manage the certification ourselves because we found that getting accredited by an outside body like City and Guilds for example compromised the way that we work with plants and the essence of our teaching too much. We have carefully structured the course toward diploma level - the foundation year is 100 hours contact time and 100 hours home study and the practitioner training is 200 hours contact time and 300 hours of home study.

After year 1, you will be able to confidently identify herbs and make a wide range of remedies and be familiar with their medicinal qualities so that you can use them on yourself and your family.

We train from the ground up. You will first build an intimate relationship with the plants and this relationship will form the strong foundation on which, if you chose to continue your studies, your healing practice would be based. In year one, you will study plants through close observation, using your intuition and then grounding all this in research and practical application of the herbs.

If you would like to treat a wider circle of patients with herbs and set up a professional practice, the practitioner training qualifies you as a Sensory Herbalist which means you can get insurance to practice within our modality and charge patients for your services.

What is our modality?

We guide you in learning to make remedies according to our tried and tested recipes that have successfully treated thousands of people over the last 20 years.

Sensory Herbalism uses drop doses, teas and tonics to address root cause of disease. We do not (like medical herbalists) treat disorders, although you are expected to know about these for the course. Instead we focus on the picture of the patient as a whole and look behind the disorder toward what might be its root cause.

As you attend 16 weekends (over the full 3 year course) you are expected to do a lot of your own work and we expect you to be very familiar with the herbs that are in the blends we teach you about. This is treating on an energetic basis. We have developed our own system of healing which is being practiced by Sensory Herbalists. You become part of a network of herbal activists striving to create change through growing projects and supporting people’s journeys back to health.

Sensory Herbalism is an holistic practice – so we also train you to use a toolkit with your patients that engages with diet, movement, meditation and ritual – all incredibly powerful healing tools.

The benefits of studying in this way are that you will leave with a set framework within which to establish your healing practice. We teach you the way that we practice and in a way that we would have liked to be taught ourselves. We train you to use diagnostic tools so that you can identify the needs of your patients. We also give you tools to work with your clients using herbs, diet, meditation, movement and ritual so that they can achieve holistic transformations in their health by addressing the root causes of their dis-ease.

There are many avenues to study in herbalism. If you want to study clinical medicine you would need to seek further training.

The Seed SistAs teach in a way that embraces creativity, magic and ritual as healing tools to super charge the plant-medicine which would form the foundation of your practice and your studies.

What if I don’t like it?

Once you have paid for the course you are making a pact with yourself to dedicate time and energy to the process that will unfold.  If for any reason you wish to leave the course we cannot offer refunds.

What if I can’t make one of the weekends?

Is my fee refundable if I decide not to do the course?

Fees are non-refundable once paid.

Will the food be able to cater for my dietary needs?
